Petkovica

The women monastery Petkovica is situated in a village called Petkovica that is about 30 km far from Sabac. It stands on the mild slopes of Cer Mountain and beginnings of Macva plain braving the time. The legend connects the monastery origin to King Dragutin and, according to material remains, the monastery dates from the second half of 13th century. When the Turkish came to this area (1521), the monastery was deserted but only temporarily. The bishop of Zvornik came to the monastery church already in 1561, which proved that the monastery lived. In Petkovica, during 16th and 17th century ‘the copying school’ existed and worked, and when the Austrians took these areas from the Turkish in 1718, a priest school started in the monastery. During the uprising, after the battle on Misar, the Turkish burnt churches and monasteries around Macva as well as Petkovica monastery. The monastery was rebuilt right after the liberation from the Turkish, but it was again destroyed in the First and Second World War. Today, Petkovica is one of the most arranged monasteries in the orthodox diocese of Sabac.
