The monument of Misar

After many-century Turkish slavery, the First Serbian Uprising broke out in 1804. The most intensive battles were fought exactly in Sabac area. The biggest and most important one was fought in Misar, on 1st and 13th August, 1806. The battle of Misar represented the first victory in fighting against the central Turkish power called ‘Porta’. Serbian rebels under the leadership of Vozd Karadjordje Petrovic, completely defeated the great Turkish army that came from Bosnia under the leadership of Sulejman Pasha Skopljak. Among rebels, many Serbian heroes were remarkable for their bravery, especially priest Luka Lazarevic, Milos Stojicevic – Pocerac, Jakov Nenadovic, Stojan Cupic – Zmaj od Nocaja, Cincar Janko and priest Smiljanic.

A monument to Karadjordje and heroes of Misar was built on 100th anniversary of Misar’s battle. It is situated in the town centre. In the 80s of the 20th century, a museum exhibition dedicated to the Misar’s battle was open not far from the monument.
