The tradition of librarianship in Sabac is longer than 160 years. The educated citizens of Sabac, High school and the church got the idea of founding the Reading club of Sabac in 1847. From that period until today, the Library of Sabac had various phases: Reading club, Reading room, Book house, Library (county, municipal, national, central). All library fund together with its shelter, café ‘Jelen’on Bairo burnt in fire during the First World War. The theatre life in Sabac was created out of the library structure, museum foundations and archive were set, library tradition of our town and even wider-of our culture was created.
The Library Home of Sabac is the Bishop’s court, a beautiful, useful and everlasting building next to which a new part, an annexe, is now being built.

As the treasury of cultural wealth, the Library of Sabac has also become central library for Macva County since 1994. The library consists of departments, funds and collections-about 160,000 books in total and several thousand volumes of periodicals, non-literary materials, chosen cultural programmes. The whole library work is automated whereas the electronic catalogue of publications can be seen on the library site: www.bibliotekasabac.org.yu

For the last few years, the library of Sabac is recognisable with its Native region department, the fund of 3725 monographic publications, 173 titles of native region periodicals, non-literary materials and special collections-an old and rare book and handwritings. The oldest book in the collection is ’Itika Jeropolitika’, published in 1774, and five books are on ‘The list of old and rare books’, a cultural welfare of exceptional significance.

The library of Sabac widens the expectation horizon of readers with its cultural programmes of high aesthetic values (literary evenings, stands, lectures, art exhibitions, book and non-literary material exhibitions, animated work with children). In that way, the library firmly remains on the route of its constant thriving and ideals to become one of the most important, if not the most important, link of the town’s cultural identity. Special celebrations in the library are Book Days lasting from May 24th to June 28th and the Library Day on October 11th.
