The fair of Sabac

The widely famous fair that is held on 21st September every year at Nativity of Virgin Mary, nearly became a synonym for Sabac. It was made famous by a song which beginning lyrics, ‘Shall we go to Sabac fair?’, became so common that they are often used as a greeting to Sabac citizens by interlocutors from other places.

During the fair that lasts for 4-5 days, over 10,000 people gather in well-known Mihajlovac, next to the Sava. Many of them come here to see something and be seen, to sell and buy, to have fun and relax. There are many miscellaneous things sold and offered here which can rarely be seen together in any other place. There are also various wonders here, such as ‘half snake – half woman’, ‘horror house’, ‘the wall of death’… You can eat roast meat under one of many tents or enjoy the ride on some of many electro – mechanical wonders that revolve, shake, squeak, creak and swing. For romantic souls, here you can still find traditional candies in the shape of heart called ‘licidersko srce’, then those made of walnuts called ‘orasnice’, alva… symbols of some ancient times. Even those people who had no intention of buying anything do not come back from Sabac fair with empty hands. They will at least take a sieve, ladle or a small wooden barrel for brandy, not because they need it but for people to see that they were at the fair, too. It is silently considered that people who do not buy anything at the fair will be followed by bad luck until the next fair. Children always look forward to the Sabac fair most.
